Bureaucratic Nightmare

The Department cannot reconcile you with an approved record of your existence. Unless you produce an authorized Form 27B/6, it can classify you as a duplicate person and assign you to permanent waiting.

This guide demonstrates the game's grammar without giving you an itinerary or an ending answer key.

The useful loop

Department procedure follows a dependable rhythm:

inspect -> ask -> acquire -> present -> verify

Read room descriptions, talk to officials, and take their requirements literally. A completed procedure restores sanity once. Repeating it does not, so your best protection is continued progress rather than grinding.

Movement and inspection

  • north, south, east, west, up, and down move through the building.
  • Some printed exits use longer directions; type the displayed phrase.
  • look redraws the current location.
  • examine [thing] or x [thing] inspects something nearby.
  • x inv [item] inspects a carried item.
  • search reveals details that an ordinary look can miss.
  • inventory or inv lists what you are carrying.
  • status reports your remaining sanity.

People and paperwork

  • talk [name] asks an official what they require.
  • take [item] picks up a portable document or tool.
  • use [item] performs a general interaction.
  • present [form], submit [form], and file [form] explicitly target a
document in your inventory.
  • combine [item] [item] ... assembles a recipe once you possess every part.

Names can be abbreviated when unambiguous. Full visible names always work. When a name might refer to the room or your inventory, use env or inv, as in use env terminal or x inv summons.

Filing cabinets

Cabinets display lettered slots. The command printed on a cabinet is literal: take 1-a selects slot a from room item 1. Pulling irrelevant paperwork still costs sanity, so research before rummaging.

Records Archive System

The archive terminal changes the command surface. Type help after connecting. The useful commands are:

  • ls [path] — list files and directories
  • cd [directory] — change directory
  • pwd — print the current directory
  • cat [file] — read a record
  • find / -name "pattern" — search the full archive by filename
  • exit — return to the physical Records Department

If you are stuck

  • Reread the Final Summons Notice.
  • Ask officials before guessing which form belongs where.
  • Search dead ends and unremarkable utility rooms.
  • Use the archive to identify exact cabinet slots and assembly requirements.
  • A small success still counts.
